Kvitova, Sharapova win Aussie openers; Stosur upset

01/17/2012 - Melbourne, Australia (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Samantha Stosur crashed out of her home Grand Slam on Tuesday, while Petra Kvitova and Maria Sharapova recorded easy first-round wins in first-round play at the Australian Open.

The sixth-seeded Stosur, who won the U.S. Open title last year, dropped a 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 decision against Romanian Sorana Cirstea. She had never advanced beyond the fourth round in Melbourne, but had also proved to be a Grand Slam contender after reaching the French Open final in 2010.

But she has displayed inconsistent form, and committed 33 unforced errors in Tuesday's loss. Stosur also hit just 12 winners.

The second-seeded Kvitova is in search of her second Grand Slam title, having won Wimbledon last year. She convincingly beat Russian Vera Dushevina, 6-2, 6-0, in 61 minutes on Tuesday and moved into the second round to face Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro, who beat Irina-Camelia Begu in her opening match.

Kvitova, 21, reached the quarterfinals in Melbourne last year before losing to Vera Zvonareva.

Sharapova, the fourth seed, needed just 58 minutes to record a 6-0, 6-1 win against Argentine Gisela Dulko. The Russian Sharapova won the Australian Open in 2008, but struggled recovering from injury in following years. However, she had a resurgence of sorts last year, reaching the fourth round in Melbourne before getting to the semifinals at Roland Garros and losing to Kvitova in the Wimbledon final.

Sharapova will face American Jamie Hampton in the second round.

German Sabine Lisicki, the 14th seed, advanced Tuesday with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 win against Swiss Stefanie Voegele. She did not qualify for the Australian Open last year, but was a surprise semifinalist at Wimbledon.

Other players to win Tuesday include 15th-seeded Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, 17th-seeded Slovak Dominika Cibulkova, 23rd-seeded Italian Roberta Vinci and 27th-seeded Russian Maria Kirilenko.

MySportsbook.com and Kentucky Derby Offer Bonuses
The 2008 Kentucky Derby has announced a $1-million bonus for this weekend’s 134th ‘Run for the Roses’ and MySportsbook.com is doing the same.

Well, not quite $1 million, but MySportsbook.com is offering a 75% rebate for Kentucky Derby lines. Check out the exclusive horse racing bonus for all the details.

According to MySportsbook.com, the favorites for Saturday’s Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky are: Curlin (+250); Street Sense (+500); Scat Daddy (+700); Circular Quay (+750); and Nobiz Like Shobiz (+800).

Derby organizers announced this week that there will be a $1-million bonus at the 2007 Kentucky Derby odds if the first-place horse wins by more than 6 1/2 lengths – the margin of Barbaro's victory last year. The bonus would be divided Saturday among the winning trainer, jockey, owner and a charity, with each receiving 25 percent. The designated charity is the Barbaro Memorial Fund.

''It's certainly creative, it's certainly fun and it has something for the horsemen, which we always want to embrace,'' Churchill Downs president and chief executive Robert Evans said at a news conference. ''What's really cool is it will force us to remember Barbaro.''

Meanwhile, the Derby favorite – Curlin – is going against the odds this year. It's been 125 years since Apollo won after skipping his 2-year-old season, and not since Regret in 1915 has such a lightly seasoned horse worn the blanket of red roses.

Arkansas Derby winner Curlin – unbeaten in three career races – tries to overcome both those obstacles in Saturday's 133rd Derby.

''We're not running against history,'' trainer Steve Asmussen said Monday. ''We're running against who they load up.''

Six other horses have run in the Derby without benefit of 2-year-old races and with three or fewer starts. The best any of them managed was a sixth-place finish by Showing Up last year.

Asmussen dismissed suggestions that Curlin's lack of racing experience could keep him from the winner's circle.

”He exudes confidence and he's got a great presence about him,'' the trainer said. ''I feel great about the position we're in. He's not worried about anything, why should you be?''

The Kentucky Derby is at 4:04 p.m., ET Saturday.

MySportsbook.com refunds all bets on Oakland, Green Bay and Tampa Bay from NFL week one.

(September 14) – Week one of NFL action saw three teams go scoreless for the first time since 1977.  Another four were unable to get a touchdown and almost half of the underdogs covered the spread. Those three teams saved bettors at MySportsbook.com from losing out completely, thanks to the company’s unique NFL Shutout Rule -- which ensures that if the team you backed goes scoreless, your wager is refunded.

Sportsbook refunded tens of thousands of dollars to customers who bet on Oakland, Green Bay and Tampa Bay, the three teams that stunk up the field so badly that their fans and backers never had a chance to get up from their couches and cheer.  In the spirit of the low scoring start to the season, odds makers at the world’s largest online sportsbook and casino have set odds on how many total shutouts there will be this season.

MySportsbook.com has posted updated sports betting lines for week two of the season.  Ben Roethlisberger’s health status is still questionable, so Willie Parker will try to lead Pittsburgh again as they travel to Jacksonville as a one point favorite.  After beating up on his little brother last week, Peyton Manning will look to lead the Colts to victory against Houston. Indianapolis is a whopping 13.5 favorite in the match-up.

Seattle, last year’s highest scoring team, showed the power of their defense with their gritty 9-6 win in Motown over the ravenous Lions.  They take their act back home to the comforts of Qwest Field where they will face the resurgent Arizona Cardinals.  The Seahawks are favored by a touchdown.
